Winter at Ormsby Hill

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

I hope everyone had a good start to this new year. After our first big snowfall, it has been seasonally cold except for two glorious spring teaser days. It is snowing again as I write, so the weather is behaving appropriately, just in time for the upcoming holiday weekend.

At the inn, we are all about cookies, coffee, and comfort. Candi, Courtney, and Yoonie have been baking away to ensure we have plenty of cookies; ten varieties right now, including a dairy free, gluten free blueberry mini bite, and gluten free banana bread. If we get snowed in, or we all have a simultaneous snack attack we will be covered.

Our brand new Mocha Joe’s Coffee service is active as of today. Mocha Joe’s is a Brattleboro, VT coffee company with incredibly knowledgeable staff, and a business ethic that includes kindness and generosity of spirit. The computerized Fetco brewer was precisely calibrated to our coffee choice. We will order our beans, they will be roasted that day and shipped to us the next day. We will grind the coffee each morning before brewing. Your morning cup will be coffee shop fresh.

This coffee will never touch a burner.

For your comfort, we are now offering winter special rates in Thompson Purdy and Tower. We have a new “midweek two night stay” special, and a “two night suite getaway.” Check out our “Specials & Packages” page for more details.

Hope you can come to see us soon. We’ll be here with cookies, coffee and comfort.

Decorating for Christmas and the Holiday Inn Tours

Sunday, December 2nd, 2012

Flowers and greens are the core of our Christmas decorations.

The first weekend of the Manchester Merriment Holiday Inn Tour (go to visitmanchestervt.com for information on the December 8 tour and other events) was a resounding success here at Ormsby Hill. I’m sure our Christmas cookies, made by Candi and Courtney were the most spectacular in town.

We had visitors from Manchester and neighboring towns as well as out of state guests of nearby inns. The weather added to the holiday spirit, with a gentle snow fall. Scott McCampbell (scubamcc@yahoo.com) was playing sensational jazz guitar, and Taylor Farm (www.taylorfarmvermont.com) brought cheese and artisinal goods from their farm, as well as other local sources.

Scott will be back with us next Saturday, and we hope Taylor Farm can make it back, too. Come taste some Vermont wine, eat some cookies, or just to say hi. Then, explore the other inns on tour, and you might as well do some shopping while you’re in town!

Last Week’s Ice Storm in Manchester, VT

Monday, March 14th, 2011

One week ago we had an incredible ice storm – beyond beautiful to look at – dangerous to be out in it.  We lost our power for more than 10 hours, but still managed to stay warm with our generator.   Thought you’d like to see photos taken from our Inn at Ormsby Hill.

Vermont Inns Welcome Returning National Guard Members

Friday, December 17th, 2010

We are both thrilled and honored to be part of a  group of Vermont’s finest country inns and bed and breakfasts who are offering free stays this winter to members of the Vermont National Guard, who are returning home from a one-year tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The 18 inns are members of Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America – which represents top-quality inns in the United States and Canada.

Nearly 1,500 Vermont National Guard soldiers are returning home from Afghanistan after participating in the Vermont Guard’s largest mobilization since World War II. The first soldiers returned home before Thanksgiving, and the rest are expected home by Christmas.

The Vermont Select Registry inns are offering a free one-night stay to any returning Guard member during the months of January, February and March 2011; the offer applies to stays on Sunday through Thursday nights.

These fine men and women have endured incredible circumstances that most Americans can’t even imagine, and our  fellow innkeepers wanted to do something to recognize their service and tell them, in a heartfelt way, “Welcome home. ”

Guard Members wanting to take advantage of the offer need only to contact one of the participating inns.

Holiday Open House

Friday, December 10th, 2010

We are preparing today for Saturday’s Annual Holiday Open House Tour – this year to benefit Habitat for Humanity (lodging for lodging – what could be more appropriate).  Last Saturday we had 82 people come through our door – we are hoping for more this weekend!!

We are honored this year to be presenting an incredible Vermont cheese tasting with cheeses from Taylor Farm (award-winning goudas) and 2010 award winning cheeses from Cabot (hand-rubbed) and Cellars of Jasper Hill (their cloth-bound cheddar is to die for).

Thought you’d like to see some of our decorations.

Winter Wedding

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Ed and Michelle

Yesterday, December 6th, Michelle and Ed from Orlando, Florida, were married here at our inn.  They had never been to Vermont before and, after much research, picked Ormsby Hill for their big day –  and we are honored they did.

A heart-shaped cake awaited them after the wedding on a tray prepared by Chris.

Champagne at the Ready

We wish them much happiness and look forward to their celebrating all of their anniversaries at Ormsby Hill!!!
