Last Week’s Ice Storm in Manchester, VT

Monday, March 14th, 2011

One week ago we had an incredible ice storm – beyond beautiful to look at – dangerous to be out in it.  We lost our power for more than 10 hours, but still managed to stay warm with our generator.   Thought you’d like to see photos taken from our Inn at Ormsby Hill.

Vermont National Guard at the Inn at Ormsby Hill

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

How fortunate for us, as innkeepers, to be able to offer our bed and breakfast in Vermont to National Guardsmen just returning from overseas.  Below is the thank you we received.

“We want to thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness to the Vermont National Guard soldiers and their spouses.  This is our first night away from our three children since he returned in December, 2010.  We are so grateful to re-connect as a ‘couple’.  Thank you again for allowing us this extremely ‘rare’ opportunity we otherwise would not have been able to afford.  Most grateful,” Chris & Jen, Fairfax, VT

“A Winter’s Day”

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Woke up this morning to the most beautiful snowfall in a very long time.  The photos below were taken from our porch and, no, they are not in black and white!!
Then all I could do was sing this song to myself:
A winter’s day / In a deep and dark … / I am… / Gazing from my window…/ On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.   Lyrics from Simon And Garfunkel

Burr – Baby It’s Cold Outside!!!!

Monday, January 24th, 2011

When we awoke this morning the thermometer actually read 20 degrees BELOW zero!!!!   Thought you’d like to see what cold looks like here at Ormsby Hill.

However, we and our guests are quite toasty and warm inside!!!!

Beautiful Winter Day

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

This morning, at 6:15 a.m. with the temperature of 8 BELOW zero,  Chris and Quincy (the dog!) went snow shoeing.

Beginning of Snow Shoe Trail

Well, after cooking breakfast, Chris has decided there is no better way to spend the rest of the day than to sit next to the roaring fire, with a good book, and Quincy at her feet.

Fire Just Waiting!!!

Mother Nature has been very kind to us this week with 15+ inches of snow this past Wednesday and two or more inches every day.  It is a gorgeous winter wonderland.

If you were staying here, you could also be enjoying all this beauty.

Winter Wonderland

Monday, December 27th, 2010

What an absolutely beautiful and gorgeous day it was today AFTER the snow stopped coming down!!!!!  Wanted to share photos of our front door before Ted was able to remove all the snow.  There was no way to get out or come in through the front door.   But, we were definitely ready for check ins this afternoon.

Front Door from the Driveway

From here, the snow was chest-high after the driveway was plowed!!

Looking Out from the Front Door

From here, the snow was knee-high!!!

We and our guests are all thrilled with this snow.  It couldn’t be any more picturesque.

Vermont Inns Welcome Returning National Guard Members

Friday, December 17th, 2010

We are both thrilled and honored to be part of a  group of Vermont’s finest country inns and bed and breakfasts who are offering free stays this winter to members of the Vermont National Guard, who are returning home from a one-year tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The 18 inns are members of Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America – which represents top-quality inns in the United States and Canada.

Nearly 1,500 Vermont National Guard soldiers are returning home from Afghanistan after participating in the Vermont Guard’s largest mobilization since World War II. The first soldiers returned home before Thanksgiving, and the rest are expected home by Christmas.

The Vermont Select Registry inns are offering a free one-night stay to any returning Guard member during the months of January, February and March 2011; the offer applies to stays on Sunday through Thursday nights.

These fine men and women have endured incredible circumstances that most Americans can’t even imagine, and our  fellow innkeepers wanted to do something to recognize their service and tell them, in a heartfelt way, “Welcome home. ”

Guard Members wanting to take advantage of the offer need only to contact one of the participating inns.

Holiday Open House

Friday, December 10th, 2010

We are preparing today for Saturday’s Annual Holiday Open House Tour – this year to benefit Habitat for Humanity (lodging for lodging – what could be more appropriate).  Last Saturday we had 82 people come through our door – we are hoping for more this weekend!!

We are honored this year to be presenting an incredible Vermont cheese tasting with cheeses from Taylor Farm (award-winning goudas) and 2010 award winning cheeses from Cabot (hand-rubbed) and Cellars of Jasper Hill (their cloth-bound cheddar is to die for).

Thought you’d like to see some of our decorations.

Winter Wedding

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Ed and Michelle

Yesterday, December 6th, Michelle and Ed from Orlando, Florida, were married here at our inn.  They had never been to Vermont before and, after much research, picked Ormsby Hill for their big day –  and we are honored they did.

A heart-shaped cake awaited them after the wedding on a tray prepared by Chris.

Champagne at the Ready

We wish them much happiness and look forward to their celebrating all of their anniversaries at Ormsby Hill!!!
